Adoption is the legal process where a person takes on the parenting of another, usually a child, from that person’s biological or legal parent or parents. Here’s more information about the adoption process and the different types of adoption plans to choose from. Get the facts you need to better understand this option.

Different Types of Adoption

You should know that there is more than one adoption option. Coming up with an adoption plan is based on your unique situation and the amount of contact you desire to have with your child and the adoptive family. Consider what type of adoption would best for you and your child.

You may choose an open, semi-open, or closed adoption plan. As the birth mother, the choice to be part of your child’s life is yours. Here are the three types of adoption in more detail:

Open adoption

With open adoption, the birth mother can choose the child’s adoptive family and form a relationship with them. Communication can happen via phone calls, letters, or regular visits.

Semi-open adoption

The birth mother has contact with the adoptive family, but communication is done through a third party, like an adoption agency or attorney.

Closed adoption

The most private plan, a closed adoption ensures that all identifying records are sealed. The birth mother remains anonymous and there is no contact between her and the adoptive family.

Making An Adoption Plan

Coming up with an adoption plan gives you clarity for your next steps. Take time to learn about adoption and help prepare for the difficult questions that may come up later. Keep in mind that what plan you write out could change later on and that’s ok.
